RSI Prevention Is Possible
Once a person has identified the warning signs and maybe has felt some of the pain associated with RSI, further prevention will be needed in order to keep muscles and joints working properly while on the job. Preventing further damage is the next step. When working at a desk in an office or at home, one should always have arm and wrist rests available. Putting a mat underneath the chair will also help. By using mats and padding, one can rest their wrists and feet on a cushioned surface which help keep them from being overworked. RSI occurs when a person repeats a motion many times throughout the day. Wrist pads will help keep wrists and arms aligned which will decrease the amount of pain felt during the day. Mats on the floor will help a person maintain their posture and keep their feet from becoming numb.
If possible, only use the computer for two hours at a time. It is important to take frequent breaks. While most people who suffer from RSI work on a computer for a living, taking breaks and walking away from the computer will help prevent further damage. Another way people get RSI is from playing video games and other activities on the computer for many hours on end. This can cause many types of injury. Finding other activities will help prevent RSI from occurring as often. Playing video games is not the problem, but playing them for many hours at a time may cause pain in the wrists, hands, and knees.
If working in a warehouse or factory where heavy lifting takes place, one should stretch before and after their workday. Exercising will also help when trying to prevent RSI. Cardiovascular exercise is the best when trying to build up strength for lifting each day. This will also keep the lungs and heart healthy. Physical activity is the only way to keep the body strong and able to perform the soma motion each day. By eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, and exercising, one should not have too many problems.
When looking for a job, try to find one that offers ways to reduce and prevent RSI. While many jobs still require repetitive motion, jobs that allow people to switch jobs tasks often will help prevent RSI. If one begins to suffer from sore joints, muscle soreness, tightness, and has trouble grabbing simple objects, they should report this pain and see a doctor. Preventing RSI can be done very easily by changing one’s daily routine. Practicing good posture, taking breaks, and trying to avoid repetitive motion will help a person avoid the onset of RSI. Companies have to do their part as well to keep employees safe. By rotating job duties and making sure employees have mats and pads will help people reduce the pain felt by RSI. If one keeps suffering even after these precautions have been made, one should see a doctor. Surgery and other procedures may be needed in order to prevent further pain.
