RSI Warning Signs

There are many warning signs of RSI that people ignore for many reasons. They may be on a tight schedule, they may have an hourly quota, or they are under a lot of stress to complete a project. Whatever the reasons, people should not ignore the warning signs of RSI. Some signs are subtle, while others are more pronounced. Fatigue, inability to pick items up, hold on to items securely, tremors, and inability to stop hands, knees, or legs from shaking are the common warning signs for RSI. When encountered with these symptoms, one should stop working, drink some water, and wait until they stop. If these symptoms persist for a few days, then a person should seek medical attention because the damage could be worse than anticipated.

RSI warning signs are only the beginning of the potential pain that a person may suffer. If left untreated, a person’s joint could stiffen permanently which could cause a person to lose their job. For those who work in offices, factories, and other high impact jobs, injuries to the body could be very serious and should be treated immediately. Once these signs occur, a person will have to alter how they sit, type, the amount of breaks they take and how they lift heavier items. Many companies offer training courses in how to move the body while working. They also implement programs that help people recover from these injuries while educating others on how to improve their workstations. While not all companies offer programs, some will provide employees with safe equipment including mats, arm and wrist rests, comfortable chairs, and back supports for those who have to lift heavy items.

For many years, RSI went unnoticed in the workplace. But when more and more people began complaining and taking off from work because of this injury, companies and other people began to take notice. When these warning signs appear it is important to report them to one’s supervisor. Other tasks may then be assigned on a rotational basis to keep the motion from becoming repetitive. If a person works from home, they should take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and they should only work two or three hours at a time. They should also buy office equipment that is comfortable and will protect the hands, wrists, knees, and feet from injury.

Even though people oftentimes ignore the warning signs of RSI, this does not mean that they are not in pain. Even if the pain is infrequent, people may be causing long-term damage to their bodies. Other warning signs of RSI include trouble getting dressed, swollen hands and toes, and inability to grab or take items from others. People should do what they can to keep RSI from developing or from getting worse. People who learn how to recognize the signs and take proper precautions at the workplace will not suffer from the effects of RSI. Teaching others is also very important. Spreading the work about RSI will help to protect others at the workplace.
